I Gave This Show A Second Chance: Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei

Hi hi, been mass binging anime, but sometimes rewatching anime.

I did watch it back when it aired, didn’t enjoyed it. But this time round, after rewatching the movie on Netflix, I suddenly got the urge to rewatch the whole series again.

This time round, the show hit totally different, from the last time I watched it. I’m going to skip the details and jump right into the re-review. I will be doing both the movie and anime.

Story

I personally enjoyed this show this time round. I guess because I understood the show’s setting and concept. It is still a little bit of a physics class, but somehow I feel like the show is a lot more understandable now.

The show pacing felt slow during my first watch, this time round, it feels rather acceptable. But after the introductory arc, pacing did accelerate constantly and the final arc was extremely fast. But they made full use of the 26 episodes so the show doesn’t feel incomplete.

The buildup is actually pretty good, making the Yokohama arc felt really impactful and I personally enjoyed this arc the most. I wish they could pull off more action scenes in the Inter-school competition arc.

I am still not a big fan with Ono Manabu, despite his really great directorial performances in slice-of-life shows and the current SAO. I was actually glad that they kept the producers and writers but changed the director. But if you want a sneak peek of how the new director performs, the movie is done by the new director.

The movie during the 2nd watch felt a little disappointed, but it doesn’t deny the fact that my first watch was still as amazing as it was. I thought there was more action than I remembered, that was the biggest reason why I was disappointed.

Overall, the season actually felt really great. The quality is pretty high budget and there is really nothing much to nitpick about.

Animations

Madhouse for S1, Eight-Bit for the movie and the upcoming S2.

Madhouse really did set a pretty high bar for future seasons. I really loved the quality. I feel like 2014 is the year where a lot of shows had extremely beautiful animations, compared to the later years.

But the biggest question is whether Eight-Bit can actually catch up. I personally think Eight-Bit is a rather decent studio, as their first show, Infinite Stratos, probably is the only show where CGI and rotoscoped anime blends in pretty perfectly. Their other shows have been decent, not groundbreaking, but not messy.

They stuck with the same character designs as Madhouse, which is great. They also added some chromatic abberation, giving a slightly refined feel. As for the combat, they pretty much kept the high bar that Madhouse has set and it looks pretty amazing. But this is just a movie.

Now I hope they can maintain that high standard for S2.

Music

I have always love Iwasaki Taku’s tracks and this one didn’t disappoint.

I feel like he did a lot better in Qualidea Code, but this one isn’t too shabby. My guess is that S2 will stick to the S1 tracks so I won’t be expecting too many new tracks.

Scores: Anime | Movie
Story: 8/10 | 8.5/10
Art: 8.5/10 | 9/10
Music: 8/10 | 8.5/10

Yeah, I took the plunge and I didn’t regret it. It was actually pretty nice. Next anime in the list is Golden Time. Yes, another rewatch.

I feel like I didn’t give this show much justice during my first watch so i decided to rewatch it again so I can understand the show a little better. Hopefully the rewatch doesn’t disappoint.

But the next post will be the mid-season thoughts. I didn’t forget about seasonals.

It will come in a couple of days, I will see you guys then!

  1. Well, guess I need to give it another look then haha!

I do remember listening to some of Taku Iwasaki’s tracks in this while doing schoolwork. That techno soundtrack really slaps hard!
