Hi hi, 2019 has been a rather eventful year, isn’t it.
2019 for me has been a rather slump year for me, in many ways. Every year this wrap up post has been transformed into many iterations. This year I will combine everything into one post because its already 2020 and the season started already. Fall 2019 snowballed everything which is why I only able to write it now.
But hey, better late than never.
I will split this post into different categories.
My Animes Of The Year
Araburu Kisetsu no Otome-domo yo.
I was initially very skeptical about this show for like the first 3 episodes, but I’m glad I plowed on and it turned out way better than I was expecting. Okada Mari does write about weird sexual troupes, which is probably my most pleasant surprise of 2019.
I think this show deserved a spot with that pretty nice wrap up which NEARLY drove me to tears. I’m not a very easy guy to tear up, with so far only like 4-5 shows that managed to pull it off.
Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld
This show really delivered and gave me a changed impression overall on Ono Manabu.
A-1 is pretty upfront that they are unable to pull off the full 50+ep package in under one sitting with the quality of animations they are aiming for, and I respect that.
Songs are decent, but most importantly, the story is moving pretty smoothly. But with the next cour being the last cour of the arc, it made me think that the first season last year was a bit too slow, making this season feel like pretty condensed.
But anyhow, I hope next season won’t disappoint.
Kono Oto Tomare
AHHH PLEASE, I WANT MOREEEE.
I won’t be writing much about this show as I am saving it for my review in the future. I was actually supposed to watch it while it was airing but I forgot to put it in my PTW list on my Anilist, making me totally forgotten that this show existed.
I won’t be writing this show anytime soon as I want to get hold of a Bluray copy, play this show with my home theater system as I think the streaming audio quality didn’t give this show any justice.

Bokuben – Definitely one of the shows I really enjoyed this year, can’t wait for the ending OVA. After the OVA I will write a full-length review.
Sounan desu ka? – Another show I personally enjoyed. I wish there is more. It is lowkey educational beside the fanservice and comedy. But it didn’t escape controversy but hey, the Japanese don’t really care what the West think.
Tejina Senpai – This one is another great show I loved. Hondo Kaede’s playful voice really made things sound very fun. The comedy is pretty lit too. Would love more, but doubt they will make more.
Toaru Kagaku no Accelerator – This one is rather unexpected, the character design revision REALLY pulled me in. The plot also intrigues me as we never seen Accelerator’s side of the story often. I would love them to adapt these designs for Railgun T but I guess that’s not happening.
Tsuujou Kougeki ga Zentai Kougeki de Ni-kai Kougeki no Okaasan wa Suki desu ka? – As for this, I put my expectations at rock bottom and I’m glad I did that. I really wonder why people just mass dropped this, like expecting this show to cross the forbidden boundaries. Funny how mainly the West thinks it’s taboo on certain things and are okay for sexual things like these. It really blows my mind.
Really wanted to put Tate no Yuusha, Gotobun, Endro and Date A Live III but they come up short… Well, let’s move on.
My Flop Anime List For The Year
I think this show is a strong enough message that P.A.Works’ original projects are no longer viable or watchable anymore. I plowed through S1 hopefully S2 would change, but I dropped S2 after 3 episodes after the mundane plot energy and the draggy plot is pretty much leading the show to nowhere.
If I want to point out the good things about the show, probably just episode 1 and the cast list. The artstyle is also pretty good, a BIG change from their signature artwork since NagiAsu.
I played the game and this show is NOT a clear representation of the game.
Madhouse destroyed this show. I wish they didn’t have 100% authority on the story plot as the game was rather on the depressing and dark side. I guess Madhouse feared that following the original theme will make the show mundane so they decided to transform this game into a dramatic action anime.
But still, didn’t enjoy it.
Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou
The concept, setting is great, and that was the biggest driving factor that lead me to watch this show.
But then, world building zero, incredibly convenient plot devices and loli placement. The story also rushed WAY too quickly in 2 episodes. I dropped it.
And this show getting a 2nd season really does blow my mind.
Hensuki – I love the artstyle, OP and the overemphasis on fetishes. But something about this show made me drop this show and I don’t remember. Might watch it again to see if my taste changed at all.
Granbelm – I like the midget Gundam concepts with a bit of Kannazuki no Miko vibe. But the story became incredibly slow after the first battle and I lost patience. That season was also one of the season which I had 20 over shows, so I was eager to drop anything. I might rewatch this one soon.
Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa Isekai demo Yoyuu de Ikinuku you desu! – The isekai theme was extremely stagnant at that point so this one really made my day even more dull.
Isekai Cheat Magician – First 3 episodes were pretty promising, then dropped the ball straight after. I don’t know why I finished the show.
Shows That Turned Out A Lot Better Than Expected
Shinchou Yuusha: Kono Yuusha ga Ore TUEEE Kuse ni Shinchou Sugiru
This one really surprised me big time. I was about to brush this show off as another Isekai.
The comedy is there, the plot drive is there. The overly cautious nature of the hero really gets me to keep watching. I hope there will be a sequel. Toyosaki Aki is really proving to be one of the most versatile voice actress in the business.
Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne!

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka II
I have always been a rather big hater of this series, but this season is starting to change my mind a little bit. I will watch S3 for sure, hopefully they can keep the momentum.
Enen no Shouboutai – This is definitely one of the good show this year, despite the controversy.
Kanata no Astra – I was EXTREMELY skeptical with how the show is going to work. Despite the distracting aspect ratios, the show really did redeemed itself at the 2nd half. I might actually rewatch this for the sake of it.
Katsute Kami Datta Kemono-tachi e – I really love the dark nature of this show. I am pretty satisfied of the whole show. I REALLY WISH for the sequel, that cliffhanger bait is ultra effective.
Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai: Tensai-tachi no Renai Zunousen – This show is getting a 2nd season, nothing much left needed to be said.
Machikado Mazoku – Despite the awkwardly fast conversations and everything, this show did it’s job in making me fully entertained. But kinda sad that Kito Akari is voicing a monotonous girl.
This upcoming section is going to be like an “I recommend this show” section as no one is talking about these shows.
Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka
I really surprised this show wasn’t picked up by a lot of people. The dark nature of the show really pulled me in and they kept it through the end. I wish there will be more shows of such tone.
This is during a period when Silver Link shows are not licensed by anyone, causing this show to fall into oblivion as people didn’t know this show existed.
I think this show is one of the “good” game adaptations. Voice cast are lit, the story has substance. I really wish this show gets more appreciation.
Joshikousei no Mudazukai
I think this show is really really neglected to a certain extent. I really miss such old-school high school comedy and this show has really brought it out.
People need to watch this for the constant comedy and certain level of dumbness that NO other show in 2019 has.
I love this.
Africa no Salaryman – Another quiet show. This has the comedy, but everyone just gets turned off by the animals.
Kochoki: Wakaki Nobunaga – For some who knows me well, I have a thing for historical anime and Deen so far is the only one who are about to pull it off, and I’m glad that this show delivered. Needs more people to watch it.
Maou-sama, Retry! – This show isn’t THAT bad. I enjoyed the cast, the pretty nicely done comedy. I want more.
Naka no Hito Genome [Jikkyouchuu] – This show was actually decent. The cast was lit, the story was okay.
Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu – The most relatable show… I forgot about this one… Wait, who is the main character of this show again?
Movie of The Year
Tenki no Ko
No doubt about this one. I really miss this movie now and it sucks that I can never watch it again for awhile.

Seishun Buta Yarou wa Yumemiru Shoujo no Yume wo Minai – I watched this one and it has met my expectations. The review is available too!
Trinity Seven Movie – Tenkuu Toshokan to Shinku no Maou – This is definitely a BIG step up from the first movie. I absolutely loved it, and the soundtrack, inserts are absolutely mindblowing. I love it. Review for this one is also available if you wanna read it.
As for live-action movies, I only watched Ameagari and I didn’t really enjoyed it so I would not put it in my movie of the year category for that. Review for that is out as well so do read up!
My Voice Actress Picks Last Year
Roles Last Year: Horie Ao (Ao-chan Can’t Study), Senko (Obviously), Kujo Shion (Sounan Desu ka?), Mile (Noukin), Salacha Schicksal (Assassins Pride)
She was really building up in 2018, and 2019 is definitely her year. Her voice in Senko definitely hits the spot. She also made her music debut just recently, so things are looking extremely bright for this girl.
Can’t wait to see what other characters she can pull off.
Roles Last Year: Iris (Enen no Shouboutai), Onishima Homare (Sounan Desu Ka), Organ (Maou-sama, Retry!), Majo (Joshikousei no Mudazukai), Asakura Rei (Rifle is Beautiful), Tamara Volkova (Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka)
She actually has a massive list this year, but I only listed the shows I watched her voiced in.
I have been rather harsh with my criticisms on her in the past, but I think she improved A WHOLE LOT and redeemed herself this year.
The voices she does this year are all pretty drastically different from her old roles, and I wish she keep up this upward trend. Iris will take my pick for my favourite voice from her.
Roles Last Year: HMS Sheffield (Azur Lane), Ashihara Miu (Domestic Girlfriend), Yawara Kai (Bocchi), Fujiwara Chika (Kaguya-sama), Kusami Luna (OreSuki), Shamiko (Machikado Mazoku), Hibino Mina (Takagi-san 2), Fizel (SAO: Alicization)
She has more roles and again, listing only the ones I watched.
This year is her biggest year yet. Her role count literally doubled from 2018. She has proven her versatility and I think 2020 might continue the upward trend.
Kito Akari – Yeah, she is one I have been keeping a look out on, but I feel like her voice is pretty much the same for most of the year and Machikado Mazoku put her in a pretty disadvantageous position. She falls short of the list.
Akasaki Chinatsu – She has the roles nailed, but I feel like Joshikousei no Mudazukai is the only one I can really come up with from the back of my brain. She needs more breakthrough roles to pull herself back up to the top steps.
Tanezaki Atsumi – I feel like this is just another year for her. But her role in Kono Oto Tomare really made me wanna put her in this list.
Ichinose Kana – After Franxx, she has been constantly in shows, not going to judge her highly I find her voice is constantly stuck in one mode.
Onishi Saori – Her roles last year were great, but I find that she has that Uchiyama Yumi vibe where she excels in voicing supporting characters better than she voicing mains.
And of course, with the female ones done…
My Voice Actor Picks Of The Year
Roles Last Year: Lizard (Africa no Salaryman), Horie Hanasaki (Ao-chan), Daichi (Afterlost), Kunai Hakuto/Ono Akira (Maou-sama, Retry!), Kobayashi Misaki (Domestic Girlfriend), Joker (Enen no Shouboutai)… and whole lot more, I think I can stop here.
I feel like he’s making an intense comeback, starting from 2018, but this year he shined A LOT.
Despite the “generic” father, serious or grizzly voice, he nails everything down. You cannot fault him… maybe at the start of Maou-sama, Retry!, I did fault him for being way too bassy.
But overall, last year was a massive year for him.
Roles Last Year: Shirogane Miyuki (Kaguya-sama), Sakai Michitaka (Kono Oto Tomare), Saitama (One Punch Man 2)
He didn’t voice a lot but I have been keeping a look out at this guy since Golden Time and his voice is pretty darn bright. I like his voice, he’s like a less annoying version of Horie Shun.
With Kaguya S2 coming this year, I can’t wait anymore.
Roles Last Year: Arthur Boyle (Enen no Shouboutai), Natsuki Subaru/ Vooren Glantz (Isekai Quartet), Oda Nobunaga (Kochoki), Wolford Shin (Kenja no Mago), Tanaka Ko (Nande koko ni Sensei ga?!)
He will definitely be my pick for most comfy voice. I cannot get sick of his roles. I wish this year will be a more massive year for him.
Shimazaki Nobunaga – I feel like he is underappreciated. He has the talent and the voice, but his roles has been rather mundane.
Nakamura Yuichi – I miss his voice and I didn’t watch a lot of his nowadays.
Sakurai Takahiro – He may have a pretty normal voice for “cool guys”, but I feel like his voice can never get sick of,
Suwabe Junichi – His voice is better last year, from the normal deep voice of his Archer days, to an overworked office worker in Senko. I wish he can voice more brighter personalities.
Hanae Natsuki – Well, his roles really carried him to the list. I wish there will be more coming from him this year.
Rookie Actor Picks
Roles Last Year: Melida Angel (Assassins Pride)
She only had a role this year, why pick her? Because she is rather underappreciated last year. Here’s wishing 2020 being a bigger year for her.
She has the talent, she needs more jobs!
Roles Last Year: Tear (Slime), Senpai (Tejina Senpai), Kiryu Mizuha (Hensuki)
I have been keeping an eye on her for ages and I feel like she is only started to ramp up her roles in 2018. 2019 isn’t so much of a massive year for her, but she really HAS talent.
Her playful voice is always the biggest reason why I chose to watch her show. 2020 for her so far is going pretty nicely, totally in love with her OP shield role.
Now we are going to a topic that I guess not many people says…
OVA of The Year
Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka?? Sing For You
This is definitely taking the cake. This OVA really drives the creators to make a season 3. The OVA was short, but the amount of insert songs that comes with it is pretty amazing.
I think this might have the best OST out of all the gochiusa OST collection. But yeah, can’t wait for season 3.
My Studio Of The Year
Shows Last Year: Wataten, Dumbbell, Senko.
After Yuru Yuri moved to other studios, Dogakobo has been the main go-to for good slice-of-lives and I wish they could have done it way sooner. But whatever, they are delivering the goods. Koisuru Asteroid so far has been looking pretty nice, I hope they can achieve new heights this year. And hopefully sticking to slice-of-lives.
The Studios That Flopped
Shows Last Year: Azur Lane, Grisaia: Phantom Trigger
I wonder why did this studio existed. They achieved so much being with 8-bit and now Tensho is literally killing the studio with how Azur Lane turned out.
Sometimes being ambitious is great, but being overly ambitious will ended up burning themselves.
Shows Last Year: Date A Live III, One Punch Man 2, Accelerator, Okaa-san, Danmachi II, Food Wars 4
Those are great shows, but why did I place them here? Because they are doing WAY TOO MUCH, but improved so little.
J.C.Staff has never been like the go-to studio for pleasing visual quality, but they can pull off great looking shows like Souma and then DAL, OPM gets subpar love and care. So that raises eyebrows. 2020 will probably continue this overloaded trend, but I wish they can just probably drop a few shows, spend more time on the projects that they have to at least try and excel in visual quality.
Well I think that’s it for the general wrap up, now for some likes and dislikes.
What I Love About 2019
- The isekai trend is slightly on the downhill trend. I like this. What will be the next trend for the next half decade? I don’t know. So far the isekais now we are looking in the near future are sequels.
- Slice-of-lives are getting pretty good. It was a bit on the mundane side on 2018 when isekais are triumphing over them.
- The new material are triumphing the sequels. And that is weird. But either way, I still love them.
- A lot of shows this year are confirmed for sequels.
- I think that last year might be my highest amount of shows watched so far.
What I Not Love About 2019
- The sequels are a bit disappointing. OPM2, DAL 3, even Souma. I feel like Souma could have just finished it last season as this season was exciting, but rather pointless. But Takagi, Bokuben did live up to my expectations so that kind of neutralizes this statement for a bit.
- The amount of “cultural appropriation” is starting to rise. I really thank Japan for falling into deaf ears on the comments. But that also caused some…
- Unwanted sequels. That is another side effect. But at least there are sequels.
- Western publishers changing subtitle/dubs for the sake of cultural appropriation.
- As anime goes more mainstream, the amount of dickheads also increases.
Well, I guess this is pretty much it for my extremely long post. Took me over 8hours of work, but hey, I got there.
Next week I was intending to write my anime of the decade stuff, but I guess it will be a tough one and time consuming one to write.
But I will still write it, just not possible to get it done next week. I do have to write my seasonal stuff for next week.
