Fall 2019: Wrap Up

Hi and Happy New Year! My first post of the decade and first post of the new year!

This has been a rocky season, hasn’t it?

I will be adding something new to my wrap up posts where I write about what I like and don’t like about the season in general.

Since Rifle is Beautiful isn’t done till the 18th (Why?!), I will be omitting that. I will write a mini review inside my Winter impressions post, whenever that’s happening. Same goes to Azur Lane.

So yeah, without further ado, time to finish this.

The Shows

Watashi, Nouryoku wa Heikinchi de tte Itta yo ne!

This show is pretty amazing. I was in for a chill ride around the isekai, but NOPE. Deep shit keeps on happening and happening, it’s just amazing. The characters are great, the music is nice, the voice cast are great too.

This show has exceeded my expectations but not enough to put it on top of my list. OP and ED were pretty great. Characters personality were pretty well thought out. Character voices were well done too.

Ore wo Suki nano wa Omae dake ka yo

Yeap, an OVA is happening this year.

The standard story of overhyping the first 3 episodes and then taper off in the later ones.

This show started off WAY too well, then I realized that the LN author is in-charge with series composition. But as the season progresses, the show just keeps going downhill. Even with the introduction of a massive roster of girls, the show fails to keep the mojo and momentum they had during the start.

The girls are great, the characters blend in nicely, but the story really does feel stale after awhile. I wouldn’t write off this show as a sham due to its inability to keep up with the momentum, the journey was worthwhile and Pantsy managed to carry the show on her own. It feels like the author only properly planned the series introduction and just throwing the plotline under the bus after the first 3 episodes. Sometimes I feel like the OP was pretty stale after a few plays. I’m not sure if that is Saito Shuuka’s natural vocals, but damn, it sounds pretty rough after a few plays.

This show need an S2? Not necessary, but the ending DOES make it look like a bad cliffhanger. Hopefully the OVA will fix things.

If I were to find one thing I like, the voice cast for sure. Misawa Sachika will take the crown here. And the whole story revolving around the “bench” really hits me right in my funny bone. I guess I didn’t hate this show a lot than I wrote.

Assassins Pride

I liked and disliked this show. The beginning felt rather stale, but things start to look rather decent by the end of the season. This show could have gotten OP of the Season, but I do not like Run Girls Run’s vocals. It is EXTREMELY unsuitable for the style of music they were singing for. Earpiercing vocals do not mix with that kind of pop.

Show enjoyment was decent, the intro did throw off some serious vibes, but the show didn’t keep up with the seriousness. Not going to give this show too much credit, but it was certainly not that big of a time waster.

Shinchou Yuusha: Kono Yuusha ga Ore TUEEE Kuse ni Shinchou Sugiru

I’m done.

This show was also another delay fest, but redeemed itself with that double last episode. Weird music choices, but great anime gags and troupes.

This show is consistent, on the story side, not the airing schedule. The gags are amazing, Toyosaki Aki really pulling off a lot of amazing vocals, boosting the comedy.

I would put this show pretty high in my list. Totally down for another season if there is any.

Enen no Shouboutai

This show is great. I’m glad the Japanese couldn’t give two fucks about what the Western audiences think about fanservice and give us a season 2.

But that aside, this show is building up into something epic and that last quarter shows that. I really cannot wait for next season. I will write a more comprehensive review once the 2nd season wraps.

But I have to say, great music, nicely thought out characters. But OP1 and ED1 still best though.

Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame ni wa Shudan wo Erandeiraremasen

I big hyped this show and regretted severely. 2nd season is announced and I wonder why.

The first 5mins was pretty damn dark, but the show literally entered into a recession straight away after. The whole story is a long way round story telling about how to make a book in a world where literacy is more valuable than gold.

But yeah with that said, I didn’t really enjoy the show all that much, BUT since season 2 is coming, I might just watch it for the sake of it. Need to complete the show. I thought this show is going to be lit because Iguchi Yuka is making a comeback, guess I was wrong.

Choujin Koukousei-tachi wa Isekai demo Yoyuu de Ikinuku you desu!

Didn’t enjoy this show one bit.

The generic isekai troupe looms around the show and I’m pretty disappointed. The premise looks pretty nice, but the story just straights me sends me to wonderland. I have zero idea where the show was going.

But yeah if this show gets a 2nd, probably not gonna try.

Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld

Same as Fire Force, will give a more comprehensive review once this show ends.

But my season overview of this is that, this might be A-1’s most ambitious show to date and they delivered. Anohana has always been their top work for me, but this one might take over if next season actually dominates again. It’s nice to see that A-1 being honest that they cannot do all 50+eps in one go and decides to split it into 3 seasons.

I was very skeptical about Ono Manabu’s ability since he made Mahouka really looked like an ACTUAL physics class, and said he should stick to directing slice-of-life. But SAO is really going to be his top show in his portfolio. Hopefully the “A-1 curse” won’t happen to this show. Not a big fan of Tomatsu Haruka’s OP, still a big fan of Adamas from the first season.

But that Sinon entrance ending really keeps me hyped for April.

Shokugeki no Souma: Shin no Sara

Got a feeling that they could have just finished this season off at the previous cour.

But either way, it was still a pretty nicely done season as usual. Can’t wait for the next season, and what it entails for the new Director and top seat. I’m also liking the slight yuri vibes…

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai!

Well, the ending for the source material is official, was pretty satisfied about it. No spoilers no worries.

But this season was a great step up from the previous one. I feel like the previous season looked pretty conservative. But now that the showrunners know that the viewers want more intimacy, this season delivered the goods.

I don’t think I need to write much here. I will write a full-length review once the OVA is out in March(?)

Africa no Salaryman

I am pretty disappointed that literally no one is talking about this show. It was pretty rancid in terms of the comedy, but it is right up my alley.

I really don’t mind another season. I need more office worker shows. The voice cast is pretty heavyweight and solid. Ogura Yui really made my day.

If you haven’t watch it yet, please do, its a good show.

Bananya: Fushigi na Nakama-tachi

I guess this one is a prequel to the previous season. I has a lot of context now so I guess this series finally makes sense.

But yeah, this show is my chill show for the season. Nothing to write home about, just enjoy the cats and the cuteness nature of the story.

I will be watching Fate/Grand Order and Boku no Hero Academia into the next season. Azur Lane and Rifle is Beautiful reviews will come whenever they are done.

Now as for the new segment…

What I Like About The Season:

Noukin Turned Out Way Better Than I Actually Expected

I really cannot stop reiterating how good this show turned out. I was really expecting this show to really turn generic, but after the halfway mark, things look a little bit on the dark side. If there is more, I’m totally down for another one.

The Isekais Were Pretty Minimal This Season

Previous season was WAY too much, like at least 40-50% of my shows were isekais. This season was a great change of pace.

What I Dislike About The Season:

This Season Production Issues Were Way Too Many

This one is way too obvious. I have never seen so many shows having to postpone episodes in a season before. Azur Lane postponing the last 2 eps till March like its the 2nd Beatless. Shinchou Yuusha postponed episodes twice, but redeemed themselves with airing the last 2 episodes in 2 days apart. Fate/Grand Order postponing for 2 weeks. Rifle is Beautiful postponed twice as well, with the last episode coming on the 18th, deep into the next season.

I really wish anime studios be less ambitious with their production and then causing major issues like this.

Speaking about ambitions…

Azur Lane Was Way Too Overly Ambitious Production For Bibury To Handle

This is pretty apparent, with the animation quality deteriorating after the 2nd half and the postponing of the last 2 episodes, it really shows Bibury is rushing deadlines and lack a quality QC team in their production. It really reminds me of Beatless and how botched the production was.

Not going to call out Yostar but, I feel like Yostar was being extremely stingy with the amount of budget they were willing to foot and Bibury promising way too much with that said budget, punching over their weight.

I guess they will fix it in the Bluray, but with the poor quality animations aired already, people will always have that everlasting impression. If they don’t, I guess Bibury’s reputation is just going to keep sinking.

How Disappointing Honzuki, OreSuki Went

Especially OreSuki, with that promising first arc. Honzuki no so much as the darkness only looms for the first 5 minutes.

But Oresuki really feels like a badly planned story with the author only having an idea about the first arc and nothing else afterwards. Honzuki felt like a long roundabout story.

Fire Force Getting Backlashed For The Wrong Reasons

This is probably one of my biggest gripe this season. I read the source material after the backlash started. Tamaki has never had an actual story, why are you guys complaining?

I really feel bad for Yuuki Aoi here, she is doing her best in bringing the best out of Tamaki, and everyone just shits on her. Now that it ended, I wish people who just shits on fanservice on this show can just not watch the 2nd season.

Fire Force to me has a good balance on serious plot and fanservice. I guess people don’t watch anime from the 2000s. Fanservice has always been a staple in anime and it will never go away. Deal with it or not watch the show. Easy.

Africa no Salaryman Being An Underdog This Season

I wish I have friends to talk to about this show. It really sucks that no one watches this. Enjoying this show doesn’t make me a furry or a zoophile, so yeah.

I’m just enjoying the human elements about working an office job. That’s it.

With that said, this (kinda) wraps up my Fall 2019. This season was promising at the start, but a lot of things made this season ended like the worst season of 2019.

I do have my Yearly Wrap Up post planned, that would come next week. January is always so busy in the anime blogging space, so I will try to write as many as I can before I go on my week long cruise.

What are your thoughts about this season? Do tell me in the comments section below!

That would be all from me for now. I will see you guys soon!
