When The Gambler That Loses The Battle Just To Win The War: Kakegurui (Anime)

Good day! It’s Day 2 of my blog spam week. I managed to marathon this season 2 yesterday.

This show has 2 seasons of 12 episodes. Manga source material.

I am intrigued in just one episode. This show has a great charm that pulled me in.

The story can be a little complex and tedious, but if you pay enough attention, it will make sense. But the tedious plotline gives the story a lot of depth. But despite the depth being so much in the main story, but the backstories for certain characters lack the depth, which is kind of weird.

They might do not have enough episode span to concentrate on sidestories or maybe they just don’t want to dwell too much into the past and concentrate on the main story.

But the gambling odds sometimes doesn’t really make much sense, like when Yumeko is obviously going to lose pretty bad, but somehow, she will still be able to find a way to win.

But despite the mind boggling odds, I loved the show. Season 1 was great, but Season 2 lacks a lot of the charm that S1 had. I wish they can focus on something else, instead of non-stop gambling after gambling after gambling. I think it’s just me, but I can get rather bored, despite the amount of variants for gambling. Season 1 was more interesting as it felt fresh, but S2 felt like they are still using the same formula from S1 to attempt to keep their charisma. For me, I think this show is stretching out to be way too long. Just let Yumeko fight Kirari and finish the story after Yumeko won, but if Yumeko loses, then you have a way to drag the story a little longer.

Pacing is pretty fast, at least for S1, S2 started to slow down a little. I do find S1 to be a little fast, when most battles finish in just 1 episode. S2 managed to drag on a little with each arc, but when you get used to S1’s pace, S2’s pace will feel extremely slow.

The S1 ending with a cliffhanger would be bad if there wasn’t any sequel. But when S2 came, the first episode totally confuses me, the context only came after the new anime OP. It’s just weird for me. I rather watch the context first then climax of the episode. They might be casting the bait with that opening scene. Ending of S2 felt pretty bad, a slight cliffhanger. We don’t know at this point if we ever get an S3, but hopefully we do since the ending felt pretty bad.

Climax on S1 was pretty darn great. but S2 felt lacking, probably because the weak buildup. I wish they spent a little more time building up like how S1 did.

Overall, I loved the show, but the flaws can be rather glaring. I might be nitpicking, but I find the show lacks that fundamental touch. S3 is always welcomed.

MAPPA is in-charge here. I am in love the character designs. Their signature distorted/over-exaggerated facial expressions really worked on to their favor here.

The colors are also vivid, everything looks sharp. I have no complains, everything is pretty much perfect.

Not in love with the OP1 but OP2 was pretty darn great. EDs were nice. BGMs felt fitting too. Nothing much to nitpick here.

Voice Cast

The most surprising name in the cast list is definitely Hayami Saori. I was actually a little in doubt here, but after 3 episodes, damn, she can really be damn masochistic. It’s nice to see that she is trying to get out of that “normal girl” voice image after voicing Shinoa in Owari no Seraph.

The rest of the cast includes Tanaka Minami, Tokukake Tatsuya, Park Romi, Saiga Mitsuki, Fukuhara Ayaka, Ise Mariya, Uchiyama Yumi, Kitahara Sayaka, Sawashiro Miyuki, Taketatsu Ayana, Nanami Karin, Ishida Akira, Wakai Yuki, Han Megumi, Takagaki Ayahi, Yamashita Nanami, Udono Mayu, Okubo Rumi, Serizawa Yuu, Egawa Hisao, Sugita Tomokazu, Iguchi Yuka.

The rest of the cast is pretty darn solid, Saori really deserves a lot of credit here. Same goes to Ise Mariya with her hysterical role. Ise Mariya is moving on her Tsundere image. I really love the voice cast they picked, they know who to match, it is great.

Scores: S1 | S2
Story: 8/10 | 7.5/10
Art: 8/10
Music: 7/10 | 8/10
VAs: 8/10 | 8.5/10

That’s it for me. I really love this show despite the fundamental flaws this show had. I am hoping for an S3 at some point. But now I will finish up with the live-action side of the show and hopefully get a review out on that soon.

More posts will come tomorrow. I will see you guys tomorrow!

  1. I enjoyed both seasons, but will admit that the first one was better. Hopefully the folks at Netlfix pay for another series, as that finale did leave a lot of things unresolved. Have you checked out the live action adaptation?
