Cooking can be a war: Shokugeki no Souma

Heyo, I’m hungry.

Manga origin, 24 volumes and still ongoing. Anime ran for 2 seasons, first was 24 eps, 2nd is 13, and there are 4 OVAs, only 1 is out by now. Some rumors said S3 is coming next season, I can’t confirm, but I don’t mind a S3. I will be covering the first 2 seasons, the OVA will come another time.

Storyline is just entertaining every episode. This is the non-chill version of Koufuku Graffiti. I never knew cooking can be so competitive. Season 1 was great, the introduction isn’t boring at all. Pacing for S1 was pretty slow sometimes, but it wasn’t so bad. Character developments was pretty decent too. There are a lot of arcs combined into the season so expect a ton of climaxes, entertaining climaxes. Ending was decently done, back then when S2 wasn’t announced.

Then S2 came, slightly disappointed because they shrunk down the ep count to 13 eps. Pacing became a lot more faster now. Character developments a bit better now, because of the fast pacing. Climax is really nice. Ending was a bit inconclusive now, I seriously hope for a 3rd season, 2 cours 3rd season.

Animations by J.C.Staff. If you want me to compare the food porn between J.C.Staff and Shaft, the studio that did Koufuku, Koufuku has better looking food, but Shokugeki has more variety, their menu is way larger. The food porn here is pretty nice, the drool is real. Character designs were great. This show is probably one of J.C.Staff best animation work in a long time.

Music is ok. I cannot feel their nano.RIPE musics, to be honest, I never really like their music. The vocals sound a lot like Passepied, which is high pitched screaming all over. BGMs were nice.

Cast list is a massive list. Matsuoka Yoshitsugu, Taneda Risa, Takahashi Minami, Hanae Natsuki, Nabatame Hitomi, Sakurai Takahiro, Uchida Maaya, Kayano Ai, Murata Taishi, Kobayashi Yusuke, Ono Yuki, Ishigami Shizuka, Onishi Saori, Akasaki Chinatsu, Okamoto Nobuhiko, Suwabe Junichi, Yasumoto Hiroki, Takahashi Mikako, Koyasu Takehito, Koyama Rikiya, Nakamura Yuichi, Noto Mamiko, Kawasumi Ayako, Komatsu Mikako, Nishi Asuka, Ishida Akira, Ito Shizuka, Kugimiya Rie, Hanazawa Kana, Kaji Yuki, Sugita Tomokazu, Hidaka Rina, Goto Saori, Seto Asami, Yamashita Daiki, Kakuma Ai, Kawada Shinji, Ohara Sayaka. Yoshitsugu’s voice is starting to get very tiresome to hear, his voice is starting to irritating me a lot more than Kaji Yuki back in 2014. Due to Taneda Risa’s hiatus, Erina will be voiced by Kanemoto Hisako in the new OVAs, which is kind of disappointing.

Score: S1 | S2

Story: 8.5/10 | 8/10

Art: 8/10

Music: 8/10 | 8.5/10

VAs: 9/10

Highly recommended for hungry people. It may be lengthy, but this show made me finish it in 4 days, so it will give you an idea on how great it was when I watched it.

  1. I really enjoyed season 1 of this because it was just kind of fun and getting ot know the characters was entertaining (plus, the food always looked amazing). Season 2 didn’t really do much for me moving into a tournament arc and sidelining a lot of the characters I liked in the show.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  2. Yeaah I totally agree!! Shokugeki no Soma makes you so hungry! Also, it inspires me to cook as well. I can’t cook but when I am baking an egg, I visualize that I’m Yukihira hahaha! but anyways as a manga reader, season three is where the real epicness starts!!!
