Romance over Technology: Gundam X

Hey hey. More mecha time.

Part of the never-ending Gundam franchise. This show ran for only 39 eps, due to various reasons. Will talk about that later.

Storyline is good. It got me hooked from the start till the end. Transiting from Gundam Wings emphasis on politics, this one concentrates more on romance and the after armageddon days. Well, imagine dozen of massive space colonies dropping onto Earth like an asteroid shower. They managed to go a bit backwards with their technology and proves that technology isn’t the key to winning a war. Even with that massive cannon mounted on that Gundam’s back, they only shot it a few times due to its rather destructive power. The antagonists are incredibly irritating, which is one of their key elements. Climax wasn’t that high and the ending left a lot of questions unanswered. Which is why we will now talk about the rather surprisingly short 39 eps count, instead of the standard 50-52eps we usually see in the other Gundam series.

Let’s start with viewer ratings. It started off good, but things starts to decline as the viewers got impatient with the bland period of the show where there isn’t much battles. We have to admit, this problem has plagued the Gundam series for a long time now, and so far, only Gundam OO and AGE are the only ones who managed to so-called avoid the issue. One key thing you need to equip yourself when watching a Gundam series is patience, with patience, you will be rewarded greatly with the wonderful ending we always see in all of the Gundam series.

Another thing is because of lack of ratings, many producers gradually drops out of the series and budget starts to gets incredibly tight. Animating Gundams cost a lot more than your ordinary shows are because of 2 things, obviously because of the ambitious 50+ eps count and also their traditional use of hand drawing for all the Gundam combat keyframes, Gundam designs, which is extremely costly and high demand for manpower and resources. What we usually see in Mecha shows nowadays are all 3DCGI-animated, which is why Gundam is so much different and loved. It is what makes them unique. Because of Sunrise’s 50+ years of experience in Gundam animation, they just keep getting better and better.

The 39 ep really killed the show. This series had a lot of potential if you ask me. The romance-over-technology-oriented plot is actually pretty nice. The romance is actually damn nice and sweet. But due to the crammed plot, it lacked a lot of depth. The pace was ok at the beginning, but when you start to enter the 20+ eps, you will see things accelerate at a really incredible pace and the final battle only had 2 eps, while the other series get about 5eps for their final battles.

Animations by obviously Sunrise. Pretty well done. They concentrated on the GX and GDX that the other Gundams and Mobile Suits look like shit. I have to admit, GX and GDX are one of the most beautiful Gundams I ever seen, after the Freedom. Their wings expansion are damn awesome.

Music is a bit weird? OP1 realy kicked ass but the ED and OP2 felt weird, especially the ED, it’s so damn random. BGMs are fine.

VAs is a pretty good list. Takagi Wataru, Kanai Mika, Horiuchi Kenryu, Naka Hiroshi, Yamazaki Takumi, Mitsuishi Kotono, Nakamura Daiki, Kumai Motoko, Nakai Kazuya, Kakazu Yumi, Morikawa Toshiyuki, Sasaki Nozomu, Aomori Shin… Long list like other Gundam series. They did their jobs well.

Story: 8/10

Art: 8/10

Music: 7/10

VAs: 8/10

Recommended for… erm… Idk, Gundam fans can watch this but the general public… maybe not…
