Kancolle and Girl und Panzer’s Real Ancestor and Air Force: Strike Witches

Good evening! I decided to write this one separately from Brave Witches since its gonna be pretty much a new series with no recurring characters.

Original anime. With 2 seasons, 1 OVA and 1 movie. Even though the OVA came later but the proper chronological order is S1, S2, OVA then lastly the movie. One thing about this show is that the girls don’t wear pants or at least skirts or even any oversized shirts, literally. This can be embarassing to watch for awhile but if you are strong enough, you will get used to it soon enough.

The storyline is great, even though Kancolle and Girls und Panzer shows similar settings and themes, this show is slightly more entertaining, with its animal ears and lovely characters. Even though its an original, the show managed to bring a lot of things to the table, like legit fight scenes, comfortable fan service and lots of moe love. The ending for both seasons are all giving a rather comforting ending, and sometimes I can’t bear to see it go. The OVA came and pretty much like usual OVAs, fanservice, one thing about this series that their fan service is very comforting to watch. The movie to show something like a final battle together as Strike Witches and it ended on a very light note. I will definitely miss the Witches, but its time to move on and welcome the Brave Witches to take over.

Animations is a variety. S1 made by Gonzo, S2 and Movie made by AIC and the OVA by Silver Link. Gonzo as usual did a terrible job with lacking of frames, weak color saturation and poor clarity. AIC managed to bring up the quality with more vivid colors and sharper overalls. Silver Link even went up a notch with smoother frames and slightly revised color palattes. One thing they managed to maintain throughout the series is the character design, which was surprising even after going through so many studios. In fact this series has the most variety in studios.

Music was a mixed bag. BGMs were nicely composed but the OP and EDs were ok. I only like ED2, OVA OP and OVA EDs, the rest were only ok.

VAs is a pretty long list of pretty nice people. Fukuen Misato, Nazuka Kaori, Nogawa Sakura, Sawashiro Miyuki, Saito Chiwa, Ito Shizuka, Kusumi Aiko, Yahagi Sayuri, Tanaka Rie, Koshimizu Ami, Kawana Machiko, Ohashi Ayuru, Takamori Natsumi, Kadowaki Mai, Takahashi Chiaki, Hara Yumi, Kakuma Ai, Ueda Kana, Sato Arise. Chiba Saeko voiced Mio for S1 then Seto Saori voiced her from S2 onwards. All of them did their job, in fact this cast has like 90% of the people I like.

Lynette best Witch, simple as that. Don’t question this British Witch and Nazuka Kaori.

Story: 8/10 (S1), 9/10 (S2), 9/10 (OVA), 8.5/10 (Movie)

Art: 7/10 (S1), 8/10 (S2), 9.5/10 (OVA), 8.5/10 (Movie)

Music: 7/10 (S1), 8/10 (S2), 9/10 (OVA and Movie)

VAs: 9.5/10

Highly recommended if you like Kancolle, Girls und Panzer, Arpeggio of Blue Steel.

  2. Strangely, while I haven’t liked Kancolle or any of those others, Strike Witches (at least the first season) kept me interested. Although why they don’t wear pants or skirts continues to baffle me because it seems like an entirely unnecessary quirk of the show.

    • Strike Witches never really disappoints me. The OVA is misleading since I was expecting a sequel from the movie but the story is still very good. I rated the story as excellent because it has value of life. I think Girls und Panzer is slightly better than Strike Witches. Both of them has value of life but Girls und Panzer also contains Art of War. Kantai Collection needs to be twice better to rival Strike Witches and Girls und Panzer.
