Depression has never felt so good before… : True Tears

Good afternoon~ This show has been one of the most unexpected show for me, didnt realize that I actually love the depressing feeling. I think I need a psychiatrist.

The name is from a VN but the storyline, characters are all different from it. So its an original material and 13eps aired in 2008. 13eps was just nice. I was a bit skeptical about this show as the director directed Glasslip, but then the script is written by someone who did AnoHana, NagiAsu, Koufuku Graffiti, Sakurasou, FSN, Canvas 2 and Kodomo no Jikan, so I decided to give it a shot.

Storyline can be a bit bland throughout the calm times, but there is some comedy and sometimes it gets very heavy and serious. The romance in this show can feel pretty sweet but sometimes it gets depressing, when the romance isnt exactly perfect as you think it is. The ending did feel mild depressing, but as the BD ver has a 3minute epilogue extension, everything goes haywire. There is no dialogue, just another sad and feely Eufonius song with animations, but it felt very overwhelming, it was so strong that I cannot forget that scene. Maybe it was because I finish Ano Natsu before watching this, so the depression feel was heavier than expected, Idk, maybe its THAT depression as an ending. Maybe some of the unrequited love are the main issue of the depression. Character personalities can sometimes be a bit weird, but you will get used to it soon enough, especially Noe, she too weird. Overall, I enjoyed the show, its bland moments isnt exactly boring me out, but they managed to make me stay up late at night so that I can finish the show in a day. Actually, this show felt a bit like Glasslip, or maybe I should say, the more complete ver of Glasslip, so its not a bad thing. Now that I watched this show, I can feel that Glasslip is actually attempting to do what they did when True Tears, but fail miserably.

Animations by P.A.Works. In fact this is their first animation since they establishment, and it was stunning. Actually its a personal preference, it was stunning at least for me. But their use of 3DCGI humans is as notorious as how feel. animated Papakiki, but at least their 3DCGI humans felt more… alive. Character design can also be up to your taste, I kinda like it. Overall, good job P.A.Works, where did your former glory go now?

Music is excellent. BGMs are perfectly matched with the atmosphere of when and what the show is doing. OP and ED are fantastic, they really does bring out the feel.

OP TVver

Full ver

ED TV ver

Full ver

I have to say this but the OP animations was actually stunning, It matched the song so perfectly, it does feel kinda… deep. Eufonius did an excellent job with that OP.

VAs is a list of pretty nice people. Ishii Makoto, Takagaki Ayahi, Nazuka Kaori, Iguchi Yuka, Yoshino Hiroyuki, Fujiwara Keiji, Takahashi Rieko, Matsuda Yuki. I find Ayahi isnt exactly fit to voice Noe, they could have found better people for her role, maybe like Koshimizu Ami or Mizuki Nana. Its been a long time since I heard Kaori voiced such a shy role and she fitted in very nicely. I hope she voice more of such roles instead of voicing Yandere and Tsundere roles. Otherwise, the rest did their job nicely.

Story: 8.5/10 (The epilogue in the BD is seriously worth getting depressed about.)

Art: 9/10

Music: 9/10

VAs: 8.5/10

Highly recommended who wanna watch some seriously depressing romantic show, its isnt cheesy.

Next post will depends, I dont know whether to push out Ano Natsu first or watch The Anthem of the Heart first. Never mind, I will sort this out.

  3. I watched this awhile ago and I remember being interested the whole time but ended up feeling really down after watching it. Every time I’ve considered a rewatch I just remember how that felt and I just can’t do it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
