Childhood memories revisited: Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai (AnoHana)

Good evening! A late night post from me about something touching.

Originated from a serial novel of 2 volumes in 2011. The anime lasted for an odd 11ep and 1 movie. See what I did there???

The storyline is well done. It does get a bit dry and boring due to its slice-of-life nature in the beginning of the anime, but the show escalates fairly quickly. It does climax so much that I can actually “feel” for the anime. This show always end with a lot of questions to keep the viewer going, to the point that its better to marathon it instead of waiting for the next ep to come. The way it climax made the last 3eps the best out of all. Even tho the show is serious most of the time, but it does not forget to pull off a few gags to ease the tension, most of the time were pretty unexpected, so its feels more lighthearted than usual. Especially the last ep, a sudden random gag while all the characters were all crying, omg, that was epic. The ending did brought a lot amount of feels, but I will rank it behind Kanon or Air, but in front of Charlotte. This may not have much feels, but it felt really meaningful. Watched the movie after that, but I could say it does felt very fulfilling, officially bring the series to a complete close. Even tho most of the time its an anime flashback, but it does bring quite a bit of new details and wrapping up the series officially. Overall it was a long but meaningful and touching journey, I love it a lot.

The characters were all very unique in their very own way. That may be the case of most of the other animes out there but the way they execute this is totally different. For almost the entire span of the anime, I thought Poppo is just a background character until the last ep where everything starts falling into place, thats when I knew that actually Poppo holds an important role after all, since the other characters tend to overshadow him. I also thought Poppo was a happy-go-lucky person, but actually he can be quite serious and emotional after all. Its really nice to see this happen in an anime for once. The love triangle is actually nice to watch, for some weird reason.

The animation is done by A-1 Pictures. Its well done, the colors they chose suits the show well, its not too bland and not too saturated, its just nice for a slice-of-life, without sacrificing any detail. Character designs were pretty nice too.

Music is very fitting too. The OP felt very lighthearted but addictive at the same time.

The ED felt very heavy and feely every time, got the tendencies to get tissues.

In fact this ED has a lot of vers… I have 4 in my playlist but I cant find them online so I cant show you guys, but the original still felt the most heavy and feely out of all of them.

VAs is a list of wonderful people. Irino Miyu, Kayano Ai, Tomatsu Haruka, Sakurai Takahiro, Seto Asami, Hayami Saori, Kondo Takayuki, Toyosaki Aki, Ohara Sayaka, Makino Yui. All of them fitted their roles nicely. Kayano Ai’s voice is my fav in this one.

Best girl? Nope… but maybe Im considering Anaru, yeah seriously. Tsuruko is a close second. Menma is too irritating.

Story: 8/10 (anime), 8.5/10 (movie)

Art: 8/10

Music: 9/10

VAs: 9/10

Highly recommended, find a day to watch everything all together, it would be a wonderful and pleasant experience.

My next post will most probably be my 1k likes special, or maybe another review, it depends.

  3. I really enjoyed this series. Like Clannad it is cute, funny and emotional. I liked how they handled the complex relationships between the estranged friends. Thanks for sharing those music links. Secret Base is a really sweet tune.

  4. Beneath Kanon and Air, yet ahead of Charlotte, eh? Well, I’ve seen neither Kanon nor Air, but I have seen Charlotte. Looks like this will fall into place next if I’m looking for an emotional ride (with slice of life, of course). Haha, Memna irritating? Again I haven’t seen it, but I know she’s the title character, right? Anyway, nice little review 🙂
