Good morning!!! Just reached my 3k mark last night, most likely my last milestone special post for the year, cant think of reaching my next milestone in a few weeks.
This one is actually one of my favourite topics. I can love an anime just by its animation quality alone, this may sound pretty superficial, but hey, eye-candy can be pretty important for an anime.I will mainly talk about the quality and not the storyline so some shitty anime might come out in the rankings. Now lets start…
10: Black Rock Shooter
Studio: Ordet (OVA and anime), Sanzigen (Anime)
The OVA quality is already pretty well done alone, but when the anime came with Sanzigen, the quality did have a significant boost…
OVA
Anime
JUST LOOK AT IT!!!
Quality: 8/10
9. Fate/Kaleid liner Prisma Illya
Studio: Silver Link
Its actually quite shocking, because the amount of detail in their combat scenes are actually damn exquisite, proving Silver Link’s worth. One of its flaws is the pretty awkward character design, even tho i got used to it, but it took quite an amount of time to do so.
WOOHOOO
Quality: 8.5/10
8. Nisekoi
Studio: Shaft
Its pretty well done, character designs are spot on, and the backgrounds were clear. But the excessive amount of abstract background tends to become really irritating. Even worse is that they changed the background artworks in the BD ver with some budget-oriented simple backgrounds, that will take some points from the score.
Quality 8.5/10
7. Monogatari series
Studio: Shaft
Its slightly better than Nisekoi with the a bit controlled amount of excessive art. But that aside, the detail, character design are all pretty and unique.
Quality 8.5/10
6. Date A Live
Studio: AIC PLUS+ (S1), Production IMS (S2, Movie)
One of my favourites, but you gotta admit, the combat scenes, character design and background were all excellent. Thats for S1. S2 cannot keep up with the quality and the colors used were pretty awkward compared to S1. But they redeemed themselves but fixing everything in the movie, slightly revised character design and updated animation managed to boost the overscore a few points.
Quality: 8.5/10
ok halfway there
5. Sword Art Online
Studio: A-1 Pictures
This can be quite debatable, even tho the normal scenes only average, but the combat scenes and background landscape were well animated.
Quality: 8.5/10
4. Kanon/Air
Studio: Kyoto Animation
I combined the both of them because they are pretty much from the same generation of KyoAni’s visual novel adaptation era with their quite similar animation quality and character design. They are actually one of the ancestor to quality character design and animation.
Quality: 8.5/10
3. Clannad
Studio: Kyoto Animation
This one is an improvement over the previous ones. They really improved the quality and character designs when they are actually good enough already.
Quality: 9/10
2. Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou
Studio: Brain’s Base
You gotta admit, its really damn good. The uniqueness of the animation quality and color rendering. It feels really eye-pleasing. Whats surprising is that its actually Brain’s Base masterpiece.
Quality: 9.5/10
this one took me quite long to pick.
1. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai/Amagi Brilliant Park
Studio: Kyoto Animation
I combined because they came from pretty much the same era and the possess equivalent powers in animation quality. Chunnibyou might be a bit higher due to excellent delusional combat scenes. Character designs are both pretty excellent, background art are well done too.
Quality: 9.5/10
Honorable Mentions
Rokujouma no Shinryakusha (Silver Link) – Its well done, cute character designs, nice background, vivid colors and excellent combat scenes. But it lacks combat so it didnt really make it. If they had more combat, most likely can replace Fate Kaleid.
Accel World (Sunrise) – Was planning to put it in the top 10, but i compare it with SAO and felt that it isnt up to mark. They lack combat scene quality but the AR were pretty well done.
Black Bullet (Kinema Kitrus) – I praised this series a lot, from storyline to lolis to animation. But the animation isnt really up to the ranking’s expectation, it was really close tho. Character design were all excellent, never seen girls like Kisara for a long time.
Charlotte/Angel Beats/Nagi no Asukara (P.A.Works) – I put them all together because they possess equivalent ability in their quality but NagiAsu tops the 3, then Charlotte and lastly Angel Beats. What Angel Beats lack is the frames in their scenes, like really lacking. Charlotte felt bland with their colors. NagiAsu is because of bad memories (oops)
Fate/Zero/Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Budget Blade Works (Ufotable) – I havent really finished this series yet but i felt the quality.
GJ-bu/Love Lab/Himouto! Umaru-chan (Dogakobo) – Again, they possess pretty much the same quality. Nice character design, vivid colors, crisps lines and backgrounds. Such a pity they didnt do the same for YuruYuri, TYO did so much better.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei/Mahou Sensou (Madhouse) – Excellent combat scenes, but lacking in substance and feel. Character design were nice.
Golden Time/Majimoji Rurumo/Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (J.C.Staff) – This I would say its the few of the best from J.C.Staff, but why i didnt include Index/Shana/Railgun/Zero? They really felt pretty bland with their combat scenes and the improvement were pretty minor. Back to topic, the trio have excellent colors, especially Sakurasou, and nicely drawn backgrounds. Character design were pretty legit also.
Tamako Market/Tamako Love Story/Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu/Suzumiya Haruhi no Shoushitsu/K-On (Kyoto Animation) – They are the few of the lower rankings in KyoAni’s portfolio, but all of them were not neglected and still look stunning and excellent.
And lastly, most of you guys might be disappointed in this one.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (Shaft) – You guys be like “HEY, this has one of the most legit combat scenes in modern era!”. I admit, i did enjoy the combat scenes, but the character designs could have been better, they look like crayon shadings. This is also one of the most normal anime Shaft have ever made.
I was intending to include worst animation quality rankings also, but this post is pretty positive and i fear that the post will become very lengthy so i did this instead.
Hope you guys enjoy~
That’s impressive record. Congrats on reaching 3K! Out of this list, I like Kyoto Animation on Clannad and A-1 Pictures with Sword Art Online. 🙂

Clannad is for sure one of my top favorites for animation. Well, Clannad is one of my top favorite animes period to be honest.

Getting used to Silver Link’s Tohsaka did take a while, but those action scenes are nearly on par with Ufotable.

I agree, the animation in your picks are quite good. My favorite for years and years is Mai-HiME though :3. That’s the only show that comes to my mind immediately if I were to make a similar post.
