Augmented Reality vs Virtual Reality: Accel World and Sword Art Online

Good afternoon, was on a hype from escaping reality, so decided to write this, and since they are both of the same setting, imma combine them into one, im not done with Log Horizon yet so i cant write that.

Any similarities?

Yeah, quite a few actually.

  • Both originated from LNs
  • Same author(Kawahara Reki)
  • Both have Hidaka Rina and Tomatsu Haruka in their cast list
  • Both have the same setting. (gaming in another reality)
  • Same timeline (Accel World is the future of SAO)
  • Both have romance while in-game and in the real world

So imma start with Accel World since its the older series. The LN has 18 volumes and still ongoing while the anime lasted for 1 season of 24eps with 2 OVA eps. This is AR, where technology takes over your neuro systems and you can see windows without any additional optical equipment, its all in your eyes. And its all wireless, except for private chatting channels, where they need wires and they speak like telepathy.

Storyline is great, ride is pretty smooth. Comedy elements isnt that good since its pretty serious. That one-of-a-kind MC tho, brings out unique points. Splitting the story into different arcs was a risky move but it even out pretty nicely, it also shows how strong the MC grows progressively along the eps but the ending was a bit abrupt, and gives you the desire to want more. The OVA came as a sequel but didnt help much, you will still want more. Judging from the time frame, its not coming out with a sequel and you need to read the LN instead. The setting is pretty well done, as the AR is pretty epic if it were to really happen in real life, and also it kinda bends a lot of physics, like accelerating the brain to the point that everything looks like it stopped time. Such a pity it didnt continue.

Art is done by Sunrise, and i would say its only average, the combat scenes isnt impressive and the frames lack in smoothness. Could be better as its 2012 when it was released. But character design is well done so its pretty much neutralized.

Music is a mixed bag, most of them dont really mix well with the theme so it feels kinda out of place.

VAs is a decent list. Kaji Yuki, Misawa Sachika, Asanuma Shintaro, Toyosaki Aki, Ueda Kana, Endo Aya, Hidaka Rina, Kuwasumi Ayako, Takahashi Mikako, Ishida Akira, Suzumura Kenichi, Sakurai Takehiro, Mizuhashi Kaori, Hino Satoshi, Kobayashi Sanae, Sakurai Harumi, Tomatsu Haruka. All of them well done but i love Sachika voicing Kuroyukihime, she sound so suitable for the role.

Besto gurl? Kuroyukihime of course.

Now for the more hyped one. The LN runs for 15 volumes and still ongoing. The anime had 2 seasons. S1 had 25 eps while S2 had 24. They also had a flim called Extra Edition but its pretty much a recap with a few newly added scenes and also an announcement of S2. This one is VR, the weakness of it is the person has to be asleep to enter VR, as it takes control of everything of your brain, and you need bulky equipment and also LAN and external power is preferred. But its still damn cool.

Storyline is a mixed bag overall. S1 SAO arc was a bit rushed as the time skip keeps happening every 1-2 eps, 4 at most, and the jump is pretty huge, i was hoping for a whole 25 eps worth of just SAO instead so that it will feel more detailed and more depth in the story. ALO arc came in and it felt a bit better than SAO, due to magic, fairies and also there isnt much time skipping so it felt more deep, then the ending was a bit out of proportion but its pretty well wrapped. Skipped the Extra Edition as i think its a waste of time. S2 came out and then BOOM, GGO, guns and artillery. But it felt a bit senseless as Kirito just has to use a light saber, then became damn OP again by deflecting live rounds. After that it all just goes downwards slowly, Excalibur arc was very pointless for me, 2 eps worth of what? Just a holy sword and then they didnt attain the sword, time wasted again. Everybody was hyping for Mother’s Rosario so decided to watch it with high expectations, then i was very disappointed, where a even more OP character comes out and was actually a girl who had terminal disease. The ending tried to give feels but i cant feel it, even tho she died pretty tragically. Oh yeah, about the incest, its actually nothing, i dont hate it, but sometimes people tend to overreact to the slightest detail so much, you guys need to watch Oreimo, thats the real deal. S2 was actually a failure to me. But the setting of the VR is pretty impressive.

Art is done by A-1 and i gotta say, its pretty well done, combat scenes are pretty epic especially GGO and the frames are pretty fluid. I love it. Character design is also very excellent, but ALO took some time to get used to, because my impression of fairies are different.

Music is a mixed bag. BGMs are all done by Kajiura Yuki so its all damn well done. As for the songs, i have a ranking.

  1. OP2 (Innocence)
  2. OP3 (Ignite)
  3. OP1 (Crossing Field)
  4. OP4 (Courage, i actually hate it a lot)

But all the ED felt all pretty shitty, so ugh.

VAs are a list of pretty well cast. Matsuoka Yoshitsugu, Tomatsu Haruka, Ito Kanae, Hidaka Rina, Takagaki Ayahi, Hayami Saori, Yamamoto Nozomi, Shiraishi Ryoko, Taketatsu Ayana, Koyasu Takehito, Yahagi Sayuri, Saito Chiwa, Yuki Aoi, Sawashiro Miyuki, Hoshi Soichiro, Osaka Ryota, Hanae Natsuki. Soichiro’s voice is a surprise for me, while the rest did their job well.

Besto gurl? UGH NO, not Asuna, she’s too clingy for me to handle. Might be Leafa/Suguha, or maybe Sinon/Shino. Idk. Hard to pick, or maybe there isnt one at all for me.

Accel World

Story: 7.5/10 (TV), 7/10 (OVA)

Art: 7/10

Music: 7/10

VAs: 8.5/10

Story: 8.5/10 (S1), 6.5/10 (S2)

Art: 8/10

Music: 8.5/10 (S1), 7/10 (S2)

VAs: 8/10 (S1), 9/10 (S2)

Both are recommended but as for SAO2, watch at your own risk.
